Yorkshire have forged a narrow lead on the third afternoon of their match against Nottinghamshire at Trent Bridge.

With Jack Leaning having reached three figures for the first time in his career, the defending County Champions reached tea on 434 for eight, an overall advantage of just six.

Leaning brought up his century from 156 balls, having hit 11 fours and a six but became one of Samit Patel’s three victims in the innings when stumped by Chris Read for 116.

Vernon Philander, Nottinghamshire’s South African fast bowler, who is playing at Trent Bridge for the first time in his career, made two vital inroads in the early part of the session, having Rich Pyrah caught at mid on and then seeing Andrew Hodd chop onto his own stumps.

Tim Bresnan was the other wicket to fall, clipping Samit Patel to slip for an attractive 34, leaving Steven Patterson and Jack Brooks to take the total past Nottinghamshire’s 428.
