Bassetlaw League round-up: Mills miss out after Papplewick slip-up

A shock defeat for leaders Papplewick & Linby saw Mansfield Hosiery Mills fail to capitalise on their misfortunes and gain top spot in the Bassetlaw & District League Championship table on Saturday.

The door was left wide open for Mills, but opponents Anston had other plans, with Mills only achieving six points as they posted 192-7, the only notable score coming from James Fenwick with a half-century as Ben Sommerville ensured that the Millers were restricted to a score below 200 with 3-47.

In reply, Anston scored the necessary runs with five wickets lost with Amila Pereira once again among the runs, scoring an unbeaten 50, supported by Kalyan Ampolu and Luke Hall with 42 and 53 respectively.

Notts and Arnold Amateur pulled off undoubtedly the biggest surprise of the day as they beat the leaders Papplewick to enhance their survival chances.

Notts & Arnold bowled the hosts out for 170 as Jordan Finney continued his fine form with the ball. He took 4-47 in tandem with young Liam Patterson-White, who took three wickets.

Papplewick were reliant on Shaharyar Aslam, with 47, and Joe Walker, with 50.

In reply Notts & Arnold lost five wickets as they gained maximum points with Samuel Ecob and the consistent Dilhan Cooray seeing them through, scoring 64 and 48 respectively.

With five wickets taken, Papplewick claimed an extra two points to achieve four points in total.

The match at Edwinstowe unfortunately fell foul of the weather as it was on a knife-edge with Worksop taking 11 and Edwinstowe nine points.

The visitors batted first and, thanks to Bernhard Beukman (50) and Tim Smith Jnr (34), attained full batting points as they scored 201-7.

Cruelly, Edwinstowe missed out on any batting points as the elements curtailed the match with Edwinstowe five runs away from the first batting point at 140.

This was gained for the loss of just four wickets, meaning that Worksop could achieve an extra bowling bonus point, with Adam Walters scoring an unbeaten 44 to provide sufficient resistance to the bowling of Worksop.

The match at Retford saw over 450 runs scored and the match drawn as neither could bowl the opposition out in the allotted time.

Visitors Thoresby were put into bat, as they amassed 261 runs for the loss of only six wickets, meaning Retford would take two bowling points and Thoresby four batting points with Thoresby’s innings built around Nayeem Ahmed (87), and Robert Shead (77).

This was a score which was always just a little far for Retford as they were 50 runs away from levelling the score.

Retford made 201 while ensuring they avoided defeat as they lost nine wickets to gain an extra two points, with Greg Mann (36), and Jonathan Cooke (71) ensuring they attained maximum batting points.

Fifth played seventh and the game ended in a draw at Glapwell. Visitors Clipstone were put in and made full use as they scored 279- 9, with scores of 67 from Tim Ward, 30 from Taylor Wright and 45 by Iain O’Brien, showing what a great batting track it was.

There was enough in it for the bowlers as well as nine wickets were taken by Glapwell with Dan Weaver taking 4-50.

In reply Glapwell showed similarly how this was a day for batting as they also received full batting points in making 217-4.

Clipstone took a bowling point as Luke Smith made a fine score of 68 and Danny Bircumshaw added an unbeaten 62 with Iain O’Brien taking three wickets as Clipstone came away the better with 15 points while Glapwell took 10 points.

The match at Sturton Road was a must win for both sides for the wrong reasons as both were fighting for survival with North Wheatley 10th and Kiveton Park bottom before play started.

It turned out to be a one-sided affair as North Wheatley with Leverton came out victors by 177 runs.

North Wheatley amassed a mammoth 305-6 with runs coming from Richard Robinson, with 80, Callum Harrison, with 42 not out in support, with Edward Tofts adding 43 to ensure that North Wheatley passed 300 for their highest score of the season.

Kiveton Park never really looked like making a match of it as Richard Robinson capped off a fantastic all-round display, taking 4-36, with only Rob Coxon showing any fight as Kiveton totalled 128 missing out on any batting bonus points.

North Wheatley took maximum points as they achieved their third win of the season.
