MANSFIELD'S Sam Hynd smashed the world 400m freestyle record as he scooped gold at the Paralympic World Cup in Manchester last week.
The 16-year-old - swimming his first full race in the S8 class - was almost nine seconds ahead of the rest of the field setting a record time of 4.31.33 minutes in tne process.

And the Ashfield School pupil has warned he will be out to break more world records at the Paralympics in Beijing in September.

"I am absolutely ecstatic with my performance," said the Nova Centurion swimmer.

"The Australian Peter Leek gave me a bit of a shock in the first 100-150m but I could see him drop of a bit after that.

"I realised I was in front which was where I wanted to be and I just went for it. The crowd played their part – they were amazing.

"It is a bonus to break the world record. I had broken the record twice before in both Paralympic trials so I knew I would be close.

"But after a whole weekend of racing I didn't think I would be able to do it – but I did.

"I will definitely go faster when I get to Beijing and I will hopefully murder that time."

Hynd has already had a golden 2008 so far which has seen him set a new European 200m individual medley record as well as 50m, 100m and 200m freestyle British bests.

The Kirkby teenager, who is currently studying A-level PE at Ashfield, is training hard as he sets his sights for glory in Beijing.

He said: "I am in hard training at the moment, so to go out there and pull out that time is just amazing. The training is definitely paying off.
"I am looking to just keep doing what I am doing and keeping going under that time and keep breaking the records, and if I do that I will have a great chance this summer."

The Paralympic World Cup is hosted by the British Paralympic Association. It is sanctioned by the IPC and IWBF, and supported by UK Sport, Manchester City Council and the Northwest Regional Development Agency (NWDA).
