AN unusual cricket match took place at Alfreton Park last Friday when a team made up of the junior Alfreton sides beat a Mortimer Wilson School teaching staff team by 10 runs.
The Alfreton XI opened the batting and started off well with the first three innings making a maximum of 25 runs each.
The Mortimer Wilson team then hit back with Andy Hale taking an excellent catch.
Alfreton finally posted a score of 124.
The Mortimer Wilson team began their reply well with Hale in top form, hitting marvellous fours and sixes to reach his maximum 25 fairly quickly.
Alfreton then took a couple of wickets with PE teacher John Clarke being bowled by Alfreton’s Tom Pawelski and other teaching staff, Mr Reed and Mr Brankin being run out.
Rain stopped pay on two occasions but finally continued with the covers on one of the first team pitches.
The final score was Alfreton XI 124, Mortimer Wilson Staff 114.
After the last over the players went inside the pavilion for a short rest before being called out again for the man of the match awards.
Mortimer Wilson’s award went to Andy Hale for making 25 and taking a catch. Alfreton’s accolade went to 13-year-old Tom Pawelski for his excellent performance with both bat and ball.
Awards were presented by Wendy Sharp, head teacher, and Chris Slater, chairman of governors.
The match officials were Mr John Walker and Mr Keith Clarke.
