Southwell Minster was packed for the Memorial Service held to celebrate the live of Tony Thorpe, the President of the Nottinghamshire Union of Golf Clubs, who died in early May.
Tributes came from Colin Rawlinson, a past captain at Coxmoor and former colleague in the Nottinghamshire Police, Dr David Hamilton, captain of the British Golf Collectors Society, and Roy Case, president of the English Golf Union and vice-president
of the Nottinghamshire Union of Golf Clubs.

On the course, the pressures of the last two weeks finally caught up with Oliver Wilson, who had a nightmare visit across the channel for the Open de France ALSTOM last week.

Four under par for the front nine in the opening round on Thursday, he looked certain to cement his growing reputation in the under level of European Golf.

But after the turn it was a different game as five bogeys in the first six holes followed by a quadruple bogey at the last undid all the good work over the front nine.

Friday proved even worse with three bogies, two double bogeys and another quadruple in a 10 over par round for the worst result of his professional career.

Meanwhile a seven under par final round left Greg Owen collecting his fifth top 10 finish of the year in only his ninth Nationwide Tour event at the Samsung-sponsored Ford Wayne Gretzky Classic at The Georgian Bay Club in Ontario on Sunday.

On the local scene, Debbie Aldridge won Sherwood Forest Ladies’ R L Jones Cup at plus 4 with Gillian Stump in second at plus 1.

Division One of the par competition was won by Gaynor Tunney at plus 7, five better than Maureen Clarke with Gillian Stump in third at level.

The consistent Debbie Aldridge won Division Two at plus 6, followed by Shelley Hadfield at plus 4 and Jane Broughton at plus 3.

Division Three was won by Sue Hewitt at level with Jan Spencer in second on minus 1 and Gill Duffy in third at minus 5.

Sue Derbyshire won the Lady Captain’s Day Stableford with 39 points.

In Division One Anne Woolley finished in first place on 38 points, one ahead of Maureen Clarke with Gaynor Tunney a further point off the pace in third.

Joan Bell won Division Two on a count back from Carol Turvey, both with 37 points. Janet Horsley was third on 35.

Brenda Mudford won Division Three with 28 points followed by Sue Hewitt (26) and Gill Duffy (24).

In the latest Ladies’ Stableford Anne Woolley reduced her handicap to 14, winning Division One with a best of the day total of 39 points.

She was followed by Gillian Glazebrook on 37 with third place going to Sue Robinson (34).

Debbie Aldridge took the top spot in Division Two with 38 points one ahead of Marlene Cooper with Teri Cooper’s 36 earning her third spot.

Sarah McNicoll won Division Three on 29 points followed by Shirley Ellis (27) and Gill Duffy (26).

Rufford Park’s Betty Barber Trophy, which raised £700 for Edwinstowe Angels Breast Cancer Care, was won by the team of Liz Stevenson, Rob Shirtcliffe and Liam Taylor with 87 points, one clear of Marion Burrell, Lee Taylor and Scott Whitworth.
