SOUTHWELL jockey Hayley Turner made history last week after becoming the first women to ride 100 winners in a calendar year.
The 25-year-old reached her landmark success over an extended mile under floodlights on 7-1 Mullitovermaurice in the Bet At ladbrokes.com claiming stakes at Wolverhampton.

In freezing conditions Turner’s James Given-trained mount drifted across the track in the straight and seemed to interfere with Special Bond.

But she raced on to hold off the fast-finishing Betws Y Coed by a neck at the line and, to her relief, there was no stewards’ enquiry and the result stood.

Turner had set herself a target of 70 wins for the year. But she chalked up her 99th winer that afternoon on 5-4 favourite Newlyn Art at Lingfield.

And, after failing on her opener at Wolverhampton later that day, the British female number one finally brought up the magic 100.

She told At The Races: “It’s brilliant, I’m really pleased and glad I did it tonight so I don’t have to worry about tomorrow. My agent’s done a fantastic job for me, he was always insistent I was going to do it. I’m thrilled, absolutely delighted.”

Turner also paid credit to trainer Michael Bell, who had given her encouragement as an apprentice jockey.

She added: “When I started as an apprentice it was difficult for him to get me onto certain owners’ horses with them not wanting a girl up. Everything’s happened very gradually for me. Hopefully it’s going to snowball next year and I can ride some better quality horses in some bigger races.”

l Up and coming Mansfield jockey Andy Yoxall came an impressive fifth in his first race for Roy Bowring Racing (Edwinstowe) at Southwell Racecourse.on Friday.

Riding Expres Maite, trained by Roy Bowring Fir Tree Farm Edwinstowe, he finished only a few lengths off the leading horses.

Both trainer and the horse owners were impressed with the ride Andy gave under the circumstances.

He had to work very hard all week to make the weight for the ride, running to work at the yard from Mansfield to Edwinstowe and back all week dropping 6lbs in the process!

Andy was the first recipient of the Dickie Bird foundation sports sponsorship award, which appeared as a Calendar local news item and also in his old home town newspaper in Barnsley, both of which have continued to follow his progress over the last few years of training at Newmarket and Lambourn.
