Row over Shirebrook circus
ANIMAL safety campaigners are urging residents to boycott a circus that is expected to perform in Shirebrook from Wednesday.
The Captive Animals' Protection Society (CAPS) opposes the use of all animals in circuses and campaigns for the Government to ban the practice.
They claim Peter Jolly's Circus still uses zebras, camels, horses and llamas, despite calls for such performances to be banned.
CAPS' campaigns assistant Paul Thomas said: "It's time to end the outdated practice of forcing animals to perform for our amusement, particularly when there are lots of high-quality circuses that rely entirely on human skills.
"In the 21st century there can be no excuse for continuing to allow the treatment of animals in this way."
Jolly's Circus was unable to provide a comment to Chad this week but a spokesman has previously claimed to have high standards of animal care and accused campaigners of having their own agenda.
The circus is being held at Shirebrook Staffs Sports & Social Club, on Langwith Road, until Sunday.
