MORE than £50,000 has been pledged by council chiefs to support Sunday train services through Shirebrook and Langwith.
Derbyshire County Council will contribute £51,183 over the next four year towards the service on the Robin Hood Line, which will benefit residents living near four railway stations in the county.

The Sunday service, which will cost more than £500,000, will come in for the first time in December on the Nottingham to Worksop line and is also being funded by Nottinghamshire County Council and Nottingham City Council.

Brian Lucas, cabinet member for environmental services, said: "This is great news for residents in and around Shirebrook, Langwith-Whaley Thorns, Creswell and Whitwell.

"They will now be able to quickly hop on a train and visit places in our region to shop, take part in leisure activities or simply get to work easier."

The new service will be operated by East Midlands Trains and will include 10 trains each way between Nottingham and Mansfield, with four continuing to Worksop.

It will run until 2011 and if it proves popular, it is hoped the Department for Transport will fund it permanently.

Would be nice to have some late night trains too so that we can get to and from concerts in the city centres and so that we don't have to rely on hotel stays etc etc. Surely it is better to look at the entire system

I can only echo Dark_Storms comments. Lets run trains on Friday and Saturday nights until 1:00am so that people can visit theatres, concerts etc. It happens in and around other cities in the UK, why oh why do we always play catch up??????

I can't see why trains aren't running until 1a.m there's concerts all week plus there's two local airports that need serving and it is all vital to the local economy.

It's high time there was a revision of the train time tables again to make the trains even more frequent between Notts and Worksop and get more people off the road in these times that's more commonsense to me.

We're derailed! Both with East Midland Trains and the single track through Kirkby Tunnel to Bulwell. And. if you've noticed, t'other trackbed is full of trams or 'infrastructure'.
Next stop, Edwinstowe...change at Tuxford, for...Tuxford.

older people will remember that kirkby had 2 tunnels both with twin trackes untill 1968 ,when i saw them digging out the filled in track bed i knew they would re establish the old twin track,s,i could not beleave it when they then filled it in ,THEN make an enbackment over it for single track all for the sake of a farm track, its not the first time though the A38 bridge near penny ema road, that one goes nowhere, someone needs to find out who wrote the checks out.
