PUPILS at Southwell's Minster School enjoyed a break from their usual lessons when they received a visit from a royal guest.
The Earl of Wessex, Prince Edward, was welcomed to the school last Wednesday by hundreds of pupils, who were joined by teachers, governors, councillors and church dignitaries.

The Prince visited the specialist humanities and music college to mark its move into a new school building at the start of this academic year, as well as celebrating the 900th anniversary of Southwell Minster.

During his visit, the royal guest was shown around the new building before speaking to staff and pupils about the work they have been doing.

Headteacher Phillip Blinston said: "This visit is the culmination of a year in which we have moved into the new school and all the work has now been completed.

"We're in a new building but our origins were in the nave of the Minster some 700 years ago, so it seems appropriate that we have this celebration in the same year as the Minster marks its anniversary."

Pupils entertained the Prince with a string quartet, performances from the school choir and a special Brazilian dance display.

The tour also included a chance for the Prince to look around Nottinghamshire County Council's new £85,000 mobile youth centre, which offers an array of activities and services for young people around the area.

At the end of his visit, the Prince was asked to unveil a plaque marking the official opening of the new school building.

He told youngsters: "I hope that you will all look after the building and that it will serve you well and I hope you keep up all of the singing and music and all of those other traditions you have here."
