MEMBERS of Newark & Sherwood District Council have chosen Coun Gordon Brooks as their new chairman for the coming year.
He was elected by fellow councillors to replace outgoing chairman Coun Sylvia Michael at the annual council meeting last week.

Coun Brooks (65) has been a district councillor for 10 years and represents the Balderton West ward, along with his wife Coun Betty Brooks.

He said: "I am very proud to represent Newark & Sherwood District Council as chairman because I believe it is a council that cares about people.

"I firmly believe in the council and what it stands for. It is a wonderful set-up and has great staff, and I hope to take that message out to all corners of the district."

Coun Brooks' chosen charity for the year will be Newark Home-Start, which supports families with children under five.

Coun Bryan Richardson, who represents Beacon ward, has been elected as vice-chairman of the council.
