STAFF and pupils at Edwinstowe's King Edwin Primary and Nursery School are celebrating this week after receiving the thumbs up from inspectors following their latest Ofsted report.

The Fourth Avenue school, which teaches pupils aged 3-11, was rated as 'good' across the board by inspectors who also praised it for improving since its last inspection.

Ofsted said all the school's pupils achieve well and they leave as well rounded individuals, both academically and socially, and are well-equipped to face the next challenges in their education.

The report says: "Teaching pushes pupils' learning on at a speedy rate and many lessons are challenging, yet fun for pupils of all abilities.
"The curriculum is well planned, stimulating and meets the individual needs of pupils effectively, while promoting a real sense of enjoyment and achievement."

Ofsted also praised the school for enriching pupils' education with a wide range of after-school clubs, visits and visitors and praised headteacher Peter Dalby for his leadership skills.

It adds that Mr Dalby plays a pivotal role in driving the school forward and benefits from strong and effective support from senior staff and key subject leaders.

All areas of the inspection were rated as good including 'achievement and standards', 'quality of provision' and 'leadership and management'.

Ofsted also highlighted the following areas where the school had excelled since its last Ofsted report.

  • Pupils who find learning difficult benefit from good levels of support especially from teaching assistants who make a significant contribution.

  • Pupils know and importantly practice what is needed to follow fit and healthy lives and manage risks well

  • The rigorous systems in place exemplify the school's fervent commitment to the well-being of pupils who feel safe and, importantly, believe they have a voice that is listened to and respected.

  • And despite the glowing report, Ofsted said the school could improve further by ensuring pupils' problem solving, investigative and enquiry skills are taught and developed in a systematic and progressive manner.

But overall the inspectors praised the school for its strong team spirit and chairman of governors Dick Empson told Chad he was very pleased with the latest report.

"This is an excellent report –– it represents a massive achievement for the staff and pupils, even more so in the light of the school being completely re-built since the last inspection," he said.
