MORE than 500 people have signed a petition calling for action to be taken to improve safety on a Blidworth road.
Villagers say they have problems crossing Dale Lane, near to its junction with Mansfield Road, and want highways bosses to install a pedestrian crossing.

Campaigner Margaret McInnes began the petition because she has to cross the road eight times a day on the school run and often has to wait a long time to be able to cross safely.

"We want a safe crossing, not just for children but adults as well," she said. "There's strong feelings about it in the village.

"The other morning it took me seven minutes to cross the road. We have got that many openings with traffic coming out.

"The council keeps saying it is not a blackspot. We don't want a blackspot — we want to stop it before it happens. You are putting your life on the line just to get across the road."

She has been backed in the campaign by Sherwood MP Paddy Tipping and a meeting with Nottinghamshire County Council highways officers and county councillor Yvonne Woodhead has been held at the site.

And Mrs McInnes said a month-long trial with a crossing patrol would now be held, but this would only help at set times of the day.

The council has also told her it will install bollards to prevent motorists parking on a dropped kerb which was put in.

A county council spokesman said a site meeting was arranged after the petition was presented to the authority.

"The possibility of recruiting a temporary school crossing patrol for a trial period was discussed," said the spokesman. "Further investigation could then take place to determine whether a pedestrian crossing can be justified."

The usual thing.

The Council want people killed before they think it to warrant any action.
