NEW Prime Minister Gordon Brown has thrown his weight behind the Shape Up Notts! campaign as he announced plans to give every pupil the chance to take part in five hours of sport a week by 2012 –– the year the Olympics comes to London.
He said the campaign mirrored his ambitions to boost sport participation across the country in the build up to the Games and had already done a 'terrific job' encouraging people to adopt more active lifestyles.
"We are now calling today on the people of Nottinghamshire –– schools, parents, volunteers and the sports world –– to make sport a central part of every child's life," he said.
"That's a great ambition for 2012 –– Britain leading the world as one of the fittest and most sporting of nations –– with a determination to develop the next generation of Nottinghamshire's sportsmen and women as our new Olympic heroes."
The Shape Up campaign, run by Sport Nottinghamshire and backed by Chad, encourages people to do at least three 30-minute sessions of activity every week as part of a healthy lifestyle.
Said Sport Nottinghamshire director Simon Starr: "It's absolutely brilliant for Sport Nottinghamshire to be leading the way and held up as an example of good practice.
"The campaign is going well and now we need the people of Notts to really show that they can rise to this challenge that the Prime Minister has set them."
