MANSFIELD'S Oak Tree Primary School is making satisfactory progress after being placed into special measures in December last year.
The previous Ofsted inspection found standards were below the minimum levels expected of primary schools at the end of Key Stage Two and 'exceptionally low' at Key Stage One.

But the monitoring inspection last month revealed standards and achievement, especially in writing and mathematics, were rising in most classes.

Attendance figures have improved, although they remain a little below average overall, but authorised absence has improved and is now at the average for primary schools.

The quality of teaching and learning has improved and there were no inadequate lessons observed during the visit and a number of lessons were good.

Inspectors reported: "Since the last inspection the headteacher has successfully refocused the school on raising standards and achievement.

"Supported well by the deputy headteacher, she has worked tirelessly to lay the foundations for improvement."

The report says that to improve further and get out of special measures the school needs to clearly define the responsibilities of all those with a leadership role, focusing on raising standards and achievement.

Said headteacher Tamsin Caputa: "We all feel very pleased and positive about the report. I would like make special mention of a remarkable group of staff who work so conscientiously even under this enormous pressure.

"Our hard work has been validated and we are confident that we will carry on improving. Our fantastic children have also been working extremely hard."
