PUPILS and staff past and present, governors, friends and representatives of Holy Cross Church, Upper Langwith, attended the retirement party of Langwith Bassett Primary School's headteacher Brian Feeney.
He is pictured at his farewell surrounded, from back left, Daniel Barton, Katie Press, Adam Stacey and Connor Emery and, front Jade Brown and Kiara Mather.

Mr Feeney was at the school for 19 years, having previously taught at Brentford in London, Derby and Ilkeston.

During his time he masterminded the school's centenary during which there were various celebrations and the production of a centenary book.

Although originally not a local man he has become, he says. 'addicted to the area, and has been much encouraged by the generosity and supportive attitude of the community'.

There has been a great liaison between the school and Holy Cross Church with pupils attending services throughout the year including at harvest time, Christmas, Easter and at the opening service for the flower festival.

Such has been Mr Feeney's popularity, past pupils are now sending their own children to the school.

A keen sportsman, he set up a cross-country challenge each winter for pupils of all the local primary schools.

At his final assembly he was treated to a little play by each class in the school, including the pre-school.

He was presented with many gifts including a leather travel journal, a gift voucher, and, from members of Holy Cross Church, a painting of the school by local artist Matthew Palmer.

Although he admits he will miss the children, staff, parents and the friends he has made in the community, in his new-found leisure time he intends to take long walks in Italy, visit his own family more often and buy a boat and take up fishing.

Ultimately his intention is to go back to his Irish roots and live on the west coast of Ireland.

He will not sever his links with the area altogether and says he will return, particularly to go to the church flower festival.

Mr Feeney's successor is Tony Chapman, from Ilkeston, who comes to the school after teaching in Nottingham.
