YOUNGSTERS in Mansfield will be able to take their first steps into a career in engineering after West Notts College launched a new vocational diploma in partnership with local schools.
The New Diploma in Engineering is the first in a series of national qualifications aimed at 14 to 19-year-olds and will be delivered at the Derby Road site and the college's 'Engine' location.

Just under 30 students from Garibaldi, Manor, All Saints', Brunts, Queen Elizabeth's and Meden schools will explore ideas and concepts behind engineering within the college environment.

College schools academy manager Cate Hunt said: "It's so exciting to be launching this new diploma. Students will be looking at key engineering principles such as design, materials, electronic systems and manufacturing.

"They will learn through reflecting on practical experience what makes innovations succeed and how to develop and launch new ideas."

Next year the college will be widening the choice of new diplomas to include hairdressing and beauty therapy, hospitality and catering and construction.

Principal Asha Khemka said: "These diplomas herald the biggest change in qualifications in over 45 years, and this vocational course will provide exciting learning opportunities for our impressionable 14 to 19-year-olds in the community.

"We are looking forward to showing them some of the best engineering teaching facilities in the county and we are confident that they will be inspired and motivated to continue into the further and higher education pathway."
