A FINE display by new boys Kevin Mabon and Jourdan Blair led South Normanton to another victory on Saturday as the Shiners consolidated third place in the league.
Manager Glyn Stacey had signed Mabon from Arnold and Curtis Shaw from Shepshed Dynamo in midweek, and immediately drafted them into the line-up.
Blair, meanwhile, was making a belated debut after missing the start of the season through injury, after
joining from Gresley Rovers.
However, they were missing Nick Ghislanzoni who has moved in the opposite direction, to the Moat Ground.
The match started at a lively pace with both teams playing some entertaining end to end football.
Mabon and Blair joined forces to cause problems for the Briggers defence.
In the 24th minute Blair broke down a Briggers attack, and using his speed on the left, centred straight to the feet of Matt Baxter, whose volley just cleared the bar.
Very much against the run of play the Briggers took the lead. Dean Shirt's corner kick was headed goalward by Craig Wilkinson and was only half cleared by skipper Joe Atkinson. Lee Garside made no mistake from close range.
Worsbrough could have gone further ahead 10 minutes later following a poor back pass to keeper Ross Whalin. Glenn Walton was quick to sieze the opportunity but Whalin was able to block his shot, and Wilkinson's follow up was over the bar.
In the 39th minute the Shiners got on level terms. Blair received the ball on the left and, again joining forces with Mabon, played an inch perfect ball to him in the box. Mabon held it up well, and then placed it perfectly to Brett Adams, who fired past Richard Stainthorpe from 25 yards.
Straight from the start of the second half the Shiners pushed forward and in the 50th minute Chris Murdock delivered a ball into the box. It was received by Blair whose first touch towards goal was magic. As Stainthorpe narrowed the angle the young striker just lobbed the ball over him and into the far corner of the net.
For the next few minutes it was all Athletic, and Stainthorpe was required to come to his defence's rescue on three occasions.
In the 55th minute Baxter got the ball on the corner of the box and fired a dipping shot, and only the brilliance of Stainthorpe prevented a goal.
A minute later, it was the turn of Atkinson who was lurking on the edge of the box. His shot was brilliantly turned round the post by the keeper.
Then in the 73rd minute Mabon forced his way into the box. Beating his marker he chipped towards the far corner but, once again, Stainthorpe was able to turn the ball over the bar.
It was a fine display by the Shiners who, having gone a goal down always looked on control against the team they managed to beat in the opening match of the season at Lees Lane.
Shaw was introduced late in the match showed promise and could well prove to be a good addition to the squad.
Tomorrow (3pm) Normanton entertain Gornal Athletic in the FA Vase.
This promises to be an entertaining match because the Peacocks currently lie second in the West Midlands Regional Premier League and are unbeaten so far this season.
