A KING'S Mill Hospital technician hopes to raise £1,000 for Leukaemia Research by driving an old Volkswagen car around as many hospitals as he can in just 24 hours.
Father-of-three Andy Ward's world was turned upside down 12 months ago when he was diagnosed with chronic lymphocytic leukaemia after a routine blood test.

He has since become committed to supporting research towards finding a cure for the condition and opted to carry out the unusual fundraising activity to raise awareness.

Former Mansfield Wood-house man Andy — who now lives in Lincolnshire — has worked at King's Mill for the last 11 years as a medical equipment technician and says the Sutton hospital is the perfect starting point for his challenge.

Along with his wife Teresa, determined Andy will set off in 'Scarlet' — a 20-year-old Volkswagen Scirocco Scala — on 24th August for the madcap dash around as many NHS hospitals as they can.

"I have always had Scirocco Scalas and we were given this 1987 one for free when I went to buy it and the seller said he could relate to our cause," he told Chad.

'Optimistic'

"It still needs a lot of work but we are very optimistic it will be up and running in time for the big day with some support from local people."

Andy says they have already been shown some commitment through sponsors and were given a Sat Nav system by a vicar to help speed up their journey.

"We really need to push for support from businesses and any supermarkets which could supply petrol would be brilliant — otherwise we might end up pushing the car," he said.

"Also, any local mechanics who could help us get the car up to scratch would be much appreciated because the better condition Scarlet is in, will help as we plan to sell it afterwards to raise even more money."

All companies who come forward and donate equipment or money will get their logo emblazoned on Scarlet.
