MANSFIELD mayor Tony Egginton has come under fire after admitting he will not be able to fulfil one of his election promises this year.
One of his campaign pledges before May's mayoral vote was to bring in a weekly green bin collection during the summer months to prevent problems with odour and maggots.
But it has emerged this week that there is no funding to bring in the project
this year — while it could take another two years before it gets off the ground.
Mansfield District Council's Labour Group leader Andy Wetton told Chad he was disappointed the pledge would not be delivered yet.
"It's pretty poor and I believe it was a mistake from the start to have fortnightly collections in the summer months," he said.
"During the summer it is imperative that bins are emptied every week.
"I think it shows poor planning when you set about these schemes without all the facts. I think he should make an effort to find the budget for it."
But Mr Egginton insisted he would work hard to introduce the scheme if residents backed the move.
"We haven't got the finance for it this year because the budgets were agreed last year," he said.
"There are lots of reasons for and against it, but if this is what the people want I am happy to pursue it."
The mayor also revealed that the council could join forces with neighbouring authorities to buy a new refuse vehicle to carry out the bin collections.
