This tiny nature reserve is so called because it used to be a religious retreat in Tudor times.
At its western end sits King's Mill Viaduct, believed to be the oldest railway viaduct in England, which dates back to 1817.
The reserve is dominated by the disused millpond of Hermitage Mill, which is surrounded by mature woodland of Oak, Ash and the occasional Holly and Yew.
Despite the small size of the site, a total of 46 species of bird have been recorded, including the Grey Heron and the Pochard.
Also present are pairs of King-fisher, Grey Wagtail, Spotted Flycatcher, Willow Tit, Bullfinch and Reed Bunting.
