LETTER: Delighted that pub has won reprieve

I was delighted to see that the William IV on Stockwell Gate, Mansfield, has been reprieved (The Chad, Wednesday March 9).

I haven’t been in since the 60s, but always liked the “feel”.

I hope that, like The Railway, it has retained the traditional atmosphere.

A bricklayer friend of that time would refer to it as “The Office” and my father always called it either “The Top House” – presumably because it was, at one time, the last pub before Sutton - or “Jack up’t Steps”, which seems appropriate.

Personally, I am sorry that it has been altered so much that it does not merit listing.

But well done the managers and may you succeed.
