This was followed by inpatient stays on wards 32 and 14, where the staff showed compassion and patience in making my stay as comfortable as was possible.

I have reflected on the shining qualities of the staff while remembering all of them have seen their wages not just stand stil,l but go backward as inflation and the cost of living – which ought to sap their morale – seldom affects the service they give to patients.

I wonder what they feel when they read about George Osborne, who inflicted on them a 1 per cent cap on pay rises for each of the last six years, has secured for himself a one day per week job with the Black Rock Trust at an annual “salary” of £650,000 per year?
