Warsop police move into town hall base

POLICE officers in Warsop are now operating from the town hall following a cost-cutting move welcomed by community leaders.

After a force-wide review, Nottinghamshire Police has agreed to the sale or termination of the lease at a dozen police stations in a bid to save more than £1.2m.

Warsop contact point, on High Street, was one of the 12 bases identified for closure - but the parish council says moving to the town hall can only benefit residents.

Chairman Coun Stuart Moody said: “It is excellent news that the police have moved into their new home in Warsop Town Hall.

“The move not only means that there will be continued police presence and a base in Warsop, but the move also helps to support the existence of the town hall and the parish council’s mission to retain a base of services for the people of Warsop.”

Police chiefs say the switch will see officers working from a more central and visible community base.

Assistant Chief Constable Paul Scarrott said: “Warsop contact point was primarily used as a neighbourhood base for the local beat team but it has suffered from poor use by the public with little demand for services.

“The reality is that in some areas very few people are using police stations, but the buildings continue to be expensive to maintain. This money could be spent more wisely on enhancing front line policing and improving our service to the public.

“Co-locating officers in existing community premises will bring our service closer to the communities we serve with little or no financial on-cost to the force.

“More importantly to local people, it puts officers back in the heart of local communities, increases their visibility and makes them more accessible.”

Advances in technology mean Blackberrys and other mobile devices give officers the flexibility of working from these locations with no loss of service for the public.
