Did you know the Queen visited Mansfield while on her Royal tour of the Midlands in 1949?

As we celebrate the Queen’s 90th birthday today, we thought you’d like to enjoy some old newsreel footage of the Queen’s visit to Mansfield before she was crowned in 1953.

This is unused footage from a 1949 newsreel with various shots of the royal family. Included are the then Princess Elizabeth and Prince Philip the Duke of Edinburgh, visiting Portland Training College in Mansfield.

Elizabeth and the Duke of Portland are then seen walking past choirboys to a platform for laying a ceremonial foundation stone, and Prince Philip inspects the Boys Brigade Guard of Honour, and a young man from the brigade presents the soon-to-be Queen with a silver cup for her son, Prince Charles.
