New bus service to help Ashfield commuters get to work

A NEW bus service will help hundreds of Ashfield commuters get to work and pupils making their way to school.

The number 2 service, run by Nottingham firm Premiere, will link Sherwood Business Park in Annesley to the tram terminal at Hucknall and as far a Brinsley, via Underwood, Selston and Jacksdale.

Coun Richard Jackson, Nottinghamshire County Council’s portfolio holder for transport and highways, said: “The new service provides an important link with the Sherwood Business Park and the local areas and we have been working closely with local businesses and representatives from parish councils to make sure that we get it right.”

For the first three years the route will be paid for through a £330,000 grant from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), allocated by the East Midlands Development Agency (emda). It is hoped the route will be self-funding after then.

“We are very grateful to emda and the ERDF for their funding,” Coun Jackson said. “We are using it to help people take up work at places they would not otherwise have been able to get to.

“It will also allow people who currently drive there to leave their cars at home and help reduce congestion and carbon emissions.”

The new service comes into service from 1st August and as well as making it easier to access areas previously difficult to get to, it is expected 200 schoolchildren will use it every day.

The bus will run from 6am-9pm, half-hourly at peak times and every hour during other hours.

It sets off from the Hucknall tram terminus to the Sherwood Business Park then Underwood, Selston, Jacksdale, Brinsley and back.

At off-peak times, the bus will continue from Brinsley as far as Eastwood before making the return journey.

Steve Greaves, Premiere managing director, said: “We are delighted to be awarded this contract as we have been very keen to expand our growing network to the north of Nottinghamshire.

“We will now work with the council, local businesses along the route and the other agencies involved to make this new route a success. By offering our range of great value tickets we hope to encourage more car users who currently drive to the business park to switch.”
