Heartless thieves have chopped down and stolen the community Christmas tree from Bilsthorpe.

The 8ft live tree, which was decorated with lights was hacked down overnight on either Friday night or early Saturday morning.

The thieves left the cut wires on the grass next to where it stood near the roundabout joining Kirklington Road and Eakring Road.

The tree had been adopted several years ago by Bilsthorpe Parish Council, and was in memory of Bilsthorpe eight-year-old Jack Taylor, who died in a swimming pool accident while on holiday in 2002.

Chairman of the parish council, Andrea Swallow, said people were ‘disgusted’ by the theft.

She said: “I was told that one resident wept when she saw it, because it looked so nice this year. To see it grow from a small tree has been fantastic, but people are disgusted by what has happened.

“Somebody has just sawn through it and left the are wires on the grass, so we’ve had to have an electrician out.”

The police have been informed about the theft and are looking into it. Anyone with information should ring police on the non-emergency number 101 quoting reference number 345 from 7th December.
