The day it was illegal to buy beer in Hucknall

The days when it was against the law to buy a round of beer will be recalled in Hucknall on Friday 21st March.

Local military historian Coun Jim Grundy is to give a free talk on ‘War and Beer’, based on his extensive knowledge of the First World War.

Coun Grundy, a Labour member of Ashfield District Council, will give his address at the town’s library from 3pm to 4pm.

A library spokeswoman said: “It is sure to be a very interesting talk and it will help to mark the centenary of the start of World War One this year.”

The event is part of a scheme by Notts County Council to promote ‘local and family history at your library’.

A further talk will be given by Tahir Ahmed on ‘Astronomy’ in the Hucknall Library meeting room on Friday, 16th May, from 2.30pm to 3.30pm.

This will be a chance to find out which stars, planets and other objects are visible in the night sky and how best to observe them.
