Teen opens gates to brand new career

A hardworking Sutton student has opened the gates to a new career after landing himself an apprenticeship.

Ryan Spencer (16) a former pupil of Quarrydale Academy - has joined the metal railings and gates manufacturer Alpha Rail, based in Kirkby.

He is now part of the technical department on a mechanical engineering apprenticeship from Vision West Notts College.

He gained seven Bs and three C’s in his GCSE’s and has joined the firm to gain experience while also studying for a NVQ level 3 in Mechanical Engineering.

His work will involve learning about CAD design and drafting design drawings for metal railing, gates and pedestrian guardrail projects, which have included the £5.2m restoration of the Forest Recreation Ground which currently the Goose Fair site.

Alpha Rail technical manager, Neil Mason, said: “We have a great relationship with Vision West Notts and we have had some fabulous apprenticeships start their career here at Alpha Rail. We are passionate about giving school leavers the opportunity to gain valuable work experience whilst they complete further work related studies.”

In his spare time Ryan coaches Squash at his local club and plays competitively at National level, representing the East Midlands.
