Plans have been approved to move Sutton market.
Councillors gave the green light to turn the current market into a car park and move traders onto Portland Square with pop-up stalls.
This came after concern from some traders that the change would negatively impact on their businesses.
Ashfield District Council’s portfolio holder for planning, coun Jim Aspinall, said this was the best way to regenerate the town.
“I understand people are reluctant to changes and this is a change for them after many years at the current site, but we need to look to the future and we need to regenerate the town.
“We think that by moving the market onto Portland Square will encourage more people to use the market as they are walking between Asda and the Idlewells shopping centre.”
He said one trader had already moved towards the centre and seen improvements in business.
“Overall we believe it will be for the betterment of the shoppers as well as traders,” he added.
The move is expected to be complete by 1st May.
