Sutton cemetery is an ‘absolute disgrace’ say visitors who are shocked at the state of the graveyard.

The Huthwaite Road resting place is in a shocking state according to several people who have visited in recent weeks.

“The grass doesn’t look like it’s been cut for some time as it is really high and looks a real mess,” said Valerie Docherty who visited her mother’s grave to mark her birthday last week. “And it looks as if the last time they did mow the grass, cuttings have sprayed up all the gravestones and made a real mess.”

Mrs Docherty said that she has noticed the overall lack of care and attention in maintenance at the cemetery for a number of months.

“It just looks awful,” she added. “I visit Mansfield cemetery and there is no comparison.

“In the autumn, after a spate of windy weather, my husband and I were even forced to move branches out of the way which had fallen as we were worried about older people falling.

“My aunt, who is in her late 80s has been forced to stop visiting because she is worried the uneven ground will cause her to fall.

“The council need to sort out the problem - it’s just not acceptable.”

Robert Aldread of Riley Close, Sutton, has contacted the council directly over the state of the cemetery.

“I don’t think there is any excuse for basic services not being performed regularly by the council.”
