Sutton care worker Sue Mercer honoured for putting people first

A WOMAN who works with people with disabilities in Sutton has received a top award for her caring nature.

Sue Mercer, who works at Willow Wood Day Services Centre, has won the Putting People First Award at the Great East Midlands Care Awards.

She was nominated by a colleague for her professional approach and willingness to improve the lives of people at Willow Wood, which is a day service for the elderly and people with learning, physical and mental disabilities.

Sue said: “My main duties are around administration for Willow Wood but thanks to the support of managers and colleagues I’ve been allowed to do more one-to-one work with users of our day services.

“It’s been a time of big changes for day care services, with more people coming to Willow Wood for the first time.

“As a team we have worked with new and existing members of the Willow Wood family to ensure that the changes go smoothly.

“I try to encourage day services users to try new things and build their confidence. Some have really blossomed, but even to see the smallest of improvements in the people I’ve worked with is thoroughly rewarding.”
