RESIDENTS in Somercotes have been left dismayed after vandals ransacked their allotments last week.

The village’s Birchwood Lane allotments were targeted by thieves who broke into every one of the sheds causing significant damage.

They also took expensive power tools, strimmers and chainsaws during the break-in, which took place some time between 18th and 19th April.

Christian Tonnies, who is secretary of the Birchwood Lane Allotment Association, said: “I was there at about 10pm on Thursday and everything was fine when I did my round.

“My wife went on Friday morning to check on the chickens and she found what had happened. It was in a terrible state.”

Meanwhile. Mr Tonnies has also urged any witnesses to come forward.

“They broke through big padlocks so they must have made a lot of noise,” he said.

“I’m surprised that no-one heard anything.
