Nottinghamshire residents and former social workers are being encouraged to consider a career in adult social and community care to help meet rising demand in the county.

The county council currently has 69 vacancies for adult social worker and community care officer roles across Nottinghamshire out of a total adult social and community care work force of around 480.

The vacancies are due to a rising demand in services due to people living longer with more complex needs and extra responsibilities placed on the authority due to the Care Act, which came into force in 2015.

Many of the roles cover the county, but some are specific to certain areas:

• Ten roles in Ashfield

• Nine roles in Bassetlaw

•Ten roles covering Broxtowe, Gedling and Rushcliffe.

• Four roles in Mansfield

• Five roles in Newark.

Social and community care workers tend to work with specific groups of people, including residents with learning disabilities, physical disabilities and mental health needs, or older people.

Their work can focus on making assessments to ensure vulnerable people’s care needs are being met and their wellbeing is not be compromised in any way, or help to provide or put in place care and support packages to help maintain their independence.

The vacant posts are in a variety of settings, including on-the-ground work going into people’s homes, supporting hospitals in the discharge of adult patients and responding to safeguarding issues in a call centre environment.

Councillor Muriel Weisz, chairman of Nottinghamshire County Council’s adult social care and health committee, said: “Social and community care work is very rewarding as it supports people in coping with challenges in every stage of their lives. It is also a very varied career and depending on the role can be office based or in the community so suits a wide range of people.”

There are also vacant temporary social worker posts that provide emergency cover across the county, which have greater access to permanent social worker positions when they arise.
