A weekend of free activities is being planned across Newark and Sherwood to mark the final year of counting down to the start of the Olympics.
The Newark and Sherwood Active Festival weekend from 22nd to 24th July will be an opportunity to try various sports and activities for free.
Newark and Sherwood District Council’s cabinet member for leisure and culture, Coun Roger Jackson, said events and activities were taking place across the country to celebrate the countdown to one year to go to the London 2012 Olympic Games.
Alexis said: “Naturally we’re all looking forward to the London Olympics and the potential interest in sport we hope it will create among the public.
“So, what better way to kick-off the final countdown than to spend a whole weekend trying out lots of different sports, all with an Olympic flavour?
“There’s something for everyone from cycling and rowing to weightlifting, volleyball and football. I hope as many people as possible register to take part and help contribute towards the ‘feel-good factor’ the Olympics is bound to create.”
Activities will be held at various sites across the district including the district’s four leisure centres at the Grove, Balderton, Dukeries in Ollerton, and Southwell and Blidworth leisure centres. Some activities will also be held at the Grove School’s Lilley and Stone site in Newark.
Olympic themed events include cycling (in spinning studios), weightlifting (in fitness suites),
rowing challenges, netball and five-a-side football tournaments, children’s activities including go-karting, football, mini Olympic challenges and family swimming sessions.
A volleyball tournament will be held in Blidworth and a netball tournament for ladies and five a-side football tournaments for males (participants must be 16 or over) will be held on Sunday, July 24 at the Grove School, Lilley and Stone site. Children’s activities will also be available so parents/carers of children are able to participate.
All free activities are on offer to all ages. Booking may be required for some activities. More detailed schedules will be released nearer the time.
