A NEW Scout group has been launched in Skegby following a huge increase in demand for places from children across Ashfield.

The 1st Skegby Scout group had its inaugural meeting last Tuesday and this was attended by an impressive 41 new Beavers, Cubs and Scouts.

Scout leaders knew that there was a demand in the area because Scout groups elsewhere in the district have waiting lists and taster sessions held earlier this year proved a huge success.

But group manager Helen Capewell said that there were even more children than expected.

“It went really, really well,” she said. “The children absolutely loved the activities and learning about St George.”

Following the special first meeting, the Beaver, Cub and Scout groups will meet separately on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays, at the Scout Hut on Mansfield Road, Skegby.

Scouting in the whole of Nottinghamshire is going through a boom, with the latest census figures showing that 704 new Scouts joined in the last year, a rise of 9.6 per cent, taking the total number to 8,659.

Numbers in Ashfield grew by 11 per cent and in Mansfield by 14 per cent.
