RESIDENTS are being advised about road closures ahead of the Olympic Torch’s arrival in Mansfield next month.

Mansfield District Council has been working on the plans with Nottinghamshire County Council, Nottinghamshire Police and LOCOG (the London Organising Committee for the Olympic Games).

Agencies want to ensure roads along the route will be clear on 28th June, while at the same time minimising disruption to residents and businesses alike.

Residents and businesses directly affected will be sent a letter advising them of how road closures and parking restrictions will affect them.

Road signs will be in place two weeks before the day the relay arrives in the district.

The torch arrives in Mansfield on day 41 of the relay around the UK ahead of London 2012 Olympic Games, where the torch will be carried by torch bearers and be on public view.

Local people intending to line the route are encouraged to plan their journey in advance and allow plenty of time.

Mansfield Mayor Tony Egginton said: “The excitement is building and we are looking forward to seeing the Olympic flame pass through the streets of Mansfield.

“This is a once in a life time experience and we have been busy planning with our partners to ensure as many people as possible can see the Olympic Torch in Mansfield and make it a day to remember.”

Supt Mark Holland said: “The Torch Relay, as with everything else connected to the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, is a celebration of sport, but we need to ensure any event that attracts large numbers of people passes off safely.

“That will be our top priority for the duration of the relay in Nottinghamshire, and we will be working with our local councils to make sure that happens.”
