The Holiday Inn at Sherwood Park, once part-owned by David Coulthard, is a sleek building that stands proudly on the edge of Sherwood Park.
The hotel’s restaurant, the Dakota Bar and Grill, keeps this modern design theme going, with a sophisticated ‘industrial’ feel to its decor.
Visiting for dinner on a balmy mid-week evening, we chose to eat in the outside dining area, which was a bit shabbier than the inside, probably due to it not being used much during this wet summer.
The menu had a good choice, including vegetarian plates, fish dishes and meat options.
For starters I had creamy wild mushrooms on toast while my husband had a tiger prawn salad. The mushrooms were delicious and the creamy sauce full of flavour, though the toast was on the soft side. The prawns were also tasty but with only four served, the portion was a bit on the small side.
I chose a 10oz sirloin steak for my main course, which came with chunky hand-cut chips and a garnish of grilled tomato and rocket. The steak - which was locally-sourced from Derbyshire - was top quality and perfectly cooked to my ‘medium’ specification, being tender and succulent.
My other half ordered a sea bass fillet with leek and saffron risotto and was particularly impressed with the risotto, which was of just the right consistency.
We treated ourselves to dessert - a hot chocolate fondant with chocolate ice cream and chocolate brownie sundae. The fondant was a bit dry inside but very chocolatey, and the sundae perfectly palatable, but nothing special.
Overall, I thought the meal was good, but the bill came to over £70 including a large glass of wine and a sparkling water, a price that seems to be more aimed at the hotel’s business clientele than the general public.
