A children’s community radio station for Ashfield and Mansfield is celebrating this week after securing funding from Children In Need.

Takeover 106.9 ,which is based at Sutton Community Academy, has been granted enough money to secure the children’s presenter position for a full year.

“We are delighted after hearing our application had been agreed,” said station manager James Finlayson. “This money means the children’s programme will be securedfor the year ahead.”

Takeover has a number of initiatives that teach radio presenting/producing and DJ-ing skills for young people including the youth unemployed.

“We work with around 30 under 18s each week from all backgrounds, including youngsters with special needs,” added James. “Our courses give them the confidence, training and skills to continue in radio or take the knowledge into further education and employment opportunities.”

The charity also run an off-site project called Takeover Digital which takes the skills into the community at schools and youth centres to reach more young people.

“We are always struggling for funding but to receive this money from such a prestigious charity is a big boost,” added James. “It gives us recognition and the seal of approval as they scrutinise applications in-depth.”
