Petition launched for a new leisure centre in Bolsover

A CONCERNED businessman has gathered hundreds of names on a petition calling for a new leisure centre in Bolsover instead of a Morrisons supermarket.

Bolsover District Council chose Morrisons as its preferred developer for the multi-million pound redevelopment at its Sherwood Lodge council office site as it prepares to move to Chesterfield College’s Clowne Campus.

Selvanayagam Elanchelian, of Bolsover Service Station, organised the petition which is in stores across the town.

He said: “If they build this supermarket with its planned petrol station it will affect business at smaller shops and businesses in the town.

“I think the council should build a leisure centre because youngsters have to go as far away as Chesterfield to swim.”

Mr Elanchelian will submit the petition to the council when it considers an expected Morrisons’ application.

The council said plans are part of a regeneration scheme and it welcomes comments during consultations.
