PARENTS frustrated by the lack of facilities for their children in Newstead Village have taken matters into their own hands.

Zoe Ward and a group of other mums have set up their own playgroup called Newstead Minors after discovering that there was a lack of facilities.

Zoe, of Tilford Road, said: “We were fed up of not having anywhere to go so a group of us got together and decided to open our own group to meet the needs of new mums and their children.

“We just wanted somewhere children can make friends and play as well as a place where new mums can get together and share experiences and have a chat over a coffee.”

Newstead Minors, which is aimed at children under five, held their first play session at the Newstead Centre on Monday between 1pm and 2.30pm and they hope it will become a weekly meeting place for parents and their youngsters.

“There is a real need for this group in the village,” said Zoe who is assisted by Catherine Gibson and Mesha and Jade Wiggins.

“We don’t have much here and we just felt it was important to have a place where parents can get out of the house as well as giving our children the opportunity to meet others and learn and develop through play.”

The sessions are free to attend with donations received towards the cost of refreshments.

Said Zoe: “The centre is offering us the room free to begin with. But we are hoping to apply for funding to expand the service and play equipment in the future.”
