Pageant queen back on fundraising trail

A former Ashfield School student who won the Miss Nottingham title in 2012 is hoping to emulate her success when she competes in a new pageant next month.

Chelcie Mayhew (19) has a CV full of beauty contestant honours that includes coming second in the prestigious Miss Great Britain competition.

Chelcie, from Alfreton, credits entering the competitions with giving her a big confidence boost as well as providing her with opportunities in modelling and acting.

But she says that it is getting involved in fundraising for charities that has given her the most pleasure.

“Winning titles has definitely given me a platform to raise awareness and funds, particularly for children’s charities such as Rainbows children’s hospice, the Brett Knoll school for children with learning disabilities and Safe@Last, a charity that helps children at risk of running away,” she said.

After Miss Great Britain, Chelcie decided to give up beauty pageants to focus on her charity work and other interests.

But she was approached to stand for Miss South Yorkshire and with the winner going on to compete for the Miss Galaxy England crown and the chance to go to Florida for Miss Galaxy World, she decided it was an opportunity ‘too good to miss’.

She is now organising more events to support Safe@Last including a second-hand clothes fashion show in Rotherham.

Tickets are £10 and available at www.misssouthyorkshire.co.uk.

Chelcie, who is studying for a business degree and who also attends the Derby Academy of Acting, hopes that she can change people’s views about beauty pageants and dispel stereotypical views of beauty queens.

“I would also like to show people what these contests are all about - that they are not just for air heads in bikinis and perhaps change a few opinions,” she added.
