GUEST COLUMN: Teen Aid team run sessions in Mansfield

We have many different activities which we host across the county to support young people.

These include youth activities and events among other things.

Young people from across Nottinghamshire have been given the chance to learn vital first aid skills as part of another exciting initiative.

Nottinghamshire County Council’s outreach team has been running the Teen Aid programme in Mansfield district over the recent half term break.

It has seen youngsters aged between 13 and 17-years-old learn the basics in first aid giving them the chance to learn how to help others in trouble.

The half term session with the young people was held at Rainworth Village Hall, in Kirklington Road, Rainworth.

Valuable tips about how to treat shock, stem bleeding and deal with incidents of choking were all covered in the sessions.

This is the third time we have run this programme and it is a great idea to help empower young people to give them really useful first aid skills that boost their life skills, training and confidence.

No-one knows when they might need to put these skills into action which is why it is such a valuable opportunity these young people have had.

The course was delivered by the county council in partnership with the company Paramedical First Aid Training, based in Derbyshire.

Paramedical First Aid’s staff who deliver the training are serving paramedics giving first-hand accounts from their own experiences.

They provide front-line emergency care in Derby and Chesterfield, with 50 years of experience, and have training rooms across Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire.

Skills learnt included:

• Demonstrations on checking for levels of consciousness and how to place an unconscious casualty in the recovery position.

• Identifying the two types of choking and demonstrate how to administer first aid to a casualty who is choking

• Listing the recognition features of shock and listing causes of shock

Nottinghamshire County Council Youth Outreach Team worker Martin Chapman said: “It’s my view that this is a must do activity for all young people not just those we work with and hopefully even if only one young person manages to help someone in need then it’s been worth it.”
