Rumours that a Tesco Express is to open in Ladybrook have been quashed by the supermarket chain.
Independent shopkeepers in Ladybrook Place were worried that the global giants would be opening a store across the road on the site of the Ladybrook pub.
They were concerned that the increased competition and long opening hours a Tesco operates would threaten their livelihoods.
Terry Cook, who runs Morestore Discounts, said: “We have heard talk that there has been plans to put a Tesco on the pub site.
“If it were to happen, it would be really bad news because it would make life difficult for the businesses already here.
“There is a real community hub here and we make a real effort to get to know our customers by name.”
But Tesco’s regional coporate affairs manager (north), Mark Thomas, said: “We can confirm that this is just a rumour – we don’t have any plans for that site.
And a spokesman for the Marston’s group, who own the pub, said: “The Ladybrook is currently undergoing a change of manager, but the pub will continue to welcome the community through its doors in the years to come.”
