A campaign to save the closure of a village family-based facility may have reaped rewards.

Newstead Childcare, run and owned by the Pre-School Learning Alliance (PSLA), issued a notice in February saying the facility would close in April as it was no longer viable.

But a group of parents enlisted the help of local councillors and MPs in a bid to keep the Tilford Road facility open.

Now, at the eleventh hour, the PSLA have announced there could be a stay of execution.

“The Pre-school Learning Alliance is reviewing all viable options for the continuation of Newstead Childcare,” said a spokesman.

“Through recent discussions between senior members of our management team and our Nottinghamshire executive sub-committee, a proposal is now being considered which may provide a future for the provision.

“While the latest proposal is under consideration, Newstead Childcare is unlikely to close on 11th April, as previously suggested. Staff, parents and partners are aware of this position and will be fully updated next week.”

Campaigners moved swiftly when they first heard the news of its imminent closure, raising petitions on-line and across the area as well as holding fundraising events in an attempt to save the unit.

They also raised awareness through the Dispatch.
