New president for Hucknall Probus club

He succeeds Alan Fallows in the position and was inducted at the club’s annual meeting, held at the Horse and Groom pub in Linby.

Tony was born in the Butlers Hill area of Hucknall and still lives in that part of the town.

In his younger days he worked at the Dispatch as an apprentice compositor for a year and a half.

He then served in the Royal Air Force for nine years, including two years in Aden and two years in Australia.

Afterwards, he kept a general shop on Portland Road, Hucknall, for about 13 years. Before his retirement in 2006, he worked at Hucknall Police Station for 22 years as a driver and handy-man. He enjoys driving and fly-fishing.

Tony said: “I feel highly honoured to be the new president. Alan is a hard act to follow because of the dedication and wisdom he brought to the position.”

Tony’s wife, Kay, died in 2001. He has a brother-in-law, Maurice Foster, who is the Probus Club’s social secretary, and a sister in Skegness.

Other officers for the coming year are Ron Holdsworth as treasurer, Denis Robinson as secretary and press officer, Aubrey Smith as almoner, Tony Aldridge as archivist and Colin Tinker as speaker finder.
