Plans to close the office at Sherwood Park in Annesley were revealed at the end of January.

Gloria De Piero, Labour MP for Ashfield, said: “It is not clear exactly how or why the DWP has come to the decision to close its office in Annesley.

“What is clear is that this is having a devastating effect on the people who work there and could be about to lose their jobs.

“We need the Government to create more jobs in Ashfield – not to take good jobs away.

“There can be no positive spin put on this decision for this area.”

Details are yet to be made clear, but it is believed any opportunities for redeployment within DWP will predominantly be in Nottingham, greatly increasing travel time for many of the Annesley workers.

It is not yet known how many opportunities for redeployment there will be.

Ms De Piero has submitted parliamentary questions to the Department for Work and Pensions to find out more about how the decision to close the Annesley office was taken and what assessment of the impact of the closure was made.

She also asked about the costs of relocating staff and resources from the Annesley site.

Ms De Piero has been in talks with the Public and Commercial Services trade union, which told her staff are having meetings to establish how the closure will affect them.
