A MOTION has been put forward for discussion before Mansfield District Council’s full meeting this evening in which MP Sir Alan Meale could be given the freedom of the district.

The Labour MP has served the area since 1987, and has been proposed that he be granted the honour.

On only four occasions from 1973 has the freedom of the district been awarded, with the recipients including swimming star Rebecca Adlington, paralympian Sam Hynd, side-car world champions Tom and Ben Birchall and Cantamus Girls Choir.

The motion will be discussed at the Civic Centre today (Tuesday) from 5.30pm.
