A LABOUR bid to get Mansfield MP Sir Alan Meale the Freedom of the District has failed tonight (Tuesday).

The party had put forward a motion to discuss the matter before Mansfield District Council’s full meeting this evening.

But despite 22 councillors voting in favour of the motion, a two-thirds majority was not reached. Twelve members voted against.

The Labour MP has served the area since 1987 and was knighted in the Queen’s Birthday Honours last year.

On only four occasions from 1973 has the freedom of the district been awarded, with the recipients including swimming star Rebecca Adlington, paralympian Sam Hynd, side-car world champions Tom and Ben Birchall and Cantamus Girls Choir.
