KIRKBY Paralympic gold medal winner Ollie Hynd has been awarded an MBE in the New Year Honours list.

Ashfield School student Ollie was given the award for services to swimming.

He won a gold in the individual 200m medley, a silver in the 400m freestyle and a bronze in the 100m backstroke during the summer’s Paralympic Games in London.

The 400m freestyle race even became a family affair, with Ollie’s brother Sam picking up the bronze.

Ollie said: “It is such an honour to be awarded an MBE, especially as such a young person, and I am very humbled.

“I want to say a big thank you to those who have worked and supported me to achieve success in the water, in particular my family and coaches Glenn, Jill and Tim.”
