Universal Credit will eventually replace six benefits, including jobseeker’s allowance, income support, child tax credit and housing benefit.

It will see working people keep 24 per cent in every extra pound.

Meale supports Usdaw (Union of Shop, Distributive and Allied Workers) in believing that the 76 per cent claw-back of additional earnings discourages people to work their way off benefits altogether.

“I hope ministers will act before the scheme is fully rolled out,” he said.

“Many working people, including some in Mansfield, will be clobbered, putting off claimants from working longer hours and potential second earners from working at all.”
